“Paralysis”

24in x 30in acrylic gouache on canvas

I have a long history of sleep paralysis. Your body and mind feels like it out sync the sensation feels like your trap inside you body. To express this experience, I thought about anatomical diagrams that expose the internal structure  the body rendered both clinical and vulnerable  alongside imagery of coffins and alien abductions, symbols of suspension and loss of control.

A thorn and rose wrap around the ribcage, reflecting the dual nature of sleep as both comfort and discomfort. A cosmic presence, like a comet, presses against the still body, slowly chipping away at its stillness. The work exists in the tension between rest and fear, where surrender to sleep becomes both intimate and unsettling
