Taking inspiration from Medieval tapestries I create my own mythology within urban landscapes. In this painting we see a girl effortlessly riding her bike  through a nocturnal cityscape. Taking the components of mille-fleur (thousand flowers) designs in the background, these floral arrangements are inspired by weeds and plants you would see walking on a sidewalk or empty lot in most east coast cities. Introducing a twist, bear traps, typically used for comedic effect in Looney Tunes cartoons, add an element of threat rather than humor. Amidst this juxtaposition of fear and danger, the girl on her pink-tasseled bike exudes a serene resilience.

Living in an urban environment can be stressful and chaotic at times, however I try to find the moments where I can convey relief and ease. In this mural I capture that moment of joy and relief from unpleasant realities by seeking entertainment in fantasy. The butterflies move from one side to the other representing the embrace of transformation. The characters channel childlike liberation and cartoony elasticity. I hope the viewer can see themselves here, in this city, surrounded by buildings, trying to find happiness and lightness within the concrete city.

Father and Daughter

Acrylic and Gouache
33x24in. (2023)

A tender moment unfolds between a father and daughter as they nap together on a train. Originally sketched during my commute in Brooklyn, the figures captivated me, prompting further development of the scene. Inspired by biblical paintings reminiscent of depictions like Mary and Jesus in old churches, I aimed to capture a similar angelic essence. This vision struck me particularly because traditional art history lacks representation of Black fathers and daughters in such settings. To bridge this gap, I combined elements from older paintings, like an angelic statue in the background, with a contemporary portrayal inspired by my fleeting encounter with this family.

the car series has been a project i've been obsessing over for a while. I enjoy composing the figural elements of the the subjects in relationship to the cars. Some are inspired by photos I found online of photographs taken of regular people, sports figure, entertainers. there is an aspirational lifestyle associated with certain cars maybe even a cult following with the cars and the years they were made. Most of cars chosen are from the late 80’s and 90’s.
