Father and Daughter
Acrylic and Gouache
33x24in. (2023)
A tender moment unfolds between a father and daughter as they nap together on a train. Originally sketched during my commute in Brooklyn, the figures captivated me, prompting further development of the scene. Inspired by biblical paintings reminiscent of depictions like Mary and Jesus in old churches, I aimed to capture a similar angelic essence. This vision struck me particularly because traditional art history lacks representation of Black fathers and daughters in such settings. To bridge this gap, I combined elements from older paintings, like an angelic statue in the background, with a contemporary portrayal inspired by my fleeting encounter with this family.
